Johnny is shown here in a press release photo with sideshow talker Paul "Mush" Wunder and girl-show talker Bill Thompson when Johnny was with the Royal American Shows, 1958.
Al Stencell in his book "Seeing is Believing: America's Sideshows" (from which this photo was taken) said "These two gentlemen could talk you into anything!"
Johnny weighed 70 lbs and was under 3' tall. He married and was the father of three children and lived in California in the off season.
"In a freak show you can make a good living, lead a useful life and not be just a hopeless case in a home where people are trying to hide you.  You are condidered one of the guys, and feel like your're serving a useful purpose."
Robert Ripley featured Johnny as "Zandau" in one of his columns in 1948 and again on the cover of a paperback edition of his "Human Oddities" book.
