UNZIE
THE ABORIGINAL BEAUTY
Unzie first exhibited in New Zealand as a teenager billed as the "Circassian Youth" in 1887 ('88) and would often show with Francis Flynn aka "General Mite" who was also appearing in Maoriland at the time. In 1888/89 he left for London to tour with the newly formed Barnum and Bailey Circus.  In early 1890, now back  in New Zealand, he was teamed up with the visiting Jo'Jo', the famous dog-faced boy and it was at this time his stage name became "Unzie".  He was still being exhibited as a Circassian however and his bill-matter was that when young "he, along with a brother and sister, was stolen by show people and taken to England."  He was said to have at one time been with Barnum's show.
Shortly thereafter, Jo-Jo and Unzie set sail for the long trip across the Pacific to the States and landed in San Francisco around May 1890. He was probably about 21 years old and his hair, originally a mere 2 - 3 ft in circumference, had now grown to 6 ft round!

(left) California ad dated May 1890.  Jo-Jo got top billing. In other ads of that year promoting the two, Unzie is not even mentioned by name. Fedor "Jo-Jo" Jeticheff had already been in the U.S. six years when he was teamed up with Unzie. The two continued to tour together the rest of that year and it is said they both sailed for St. Petersburg April 1892 for a tour.
UNZIE'S MARVELOUS HAIR
Locks of an Australian That Have to Be Cut Twice a Week
It has hitherto been believed that the lowest specimen of the human race was the Australian aborigine.  A curious contradiction of this theory is found in the prescence of an intelligent, well educated Australian native in this country.  Except in the contour of his features, he resembles his race in nothing.  He is quite white, well formed and can converse agreeably on almost any topic.
Born twenty-seven years ago in Tarraboadza, New South Wales, he was worshiped as a kind of god by his own people, the "black fellows," until an English colonist stole him away and exhibited the phenomenal child in Melbourne.  The most interesting thing about Unzie is his hair.  It is a great snow-white mass, which stands all around his head like an opened umbrella, and measures six feet in circumference.
The growth of these white locks is simply marvelous.  They require trimming twice a week to keep them at their present length.  Unzie is a great traveler, making his first appearance in this country when he landed at San Francisco five years ago.  He appears to have completely lost all desire to revisit the scenes of his childhood where it is probable he is still worshipped as "the white god."

These two boys, Charley and Danny Hadley, were billed as Albino Twins when with Barnum. The one on the left sure looks like he could be a young Unzie. What do you think?

Unzie's good looks were not lost on his managers or public.  He was variously referred to as the "most beautiful man in the world; the Handsomest Man in the World and even as Unzie, the Albino Apollo!
