Having many books and images of sideshow performers it struck me recently as odd how many posed for the camera nude or semi-nude at a time when you would think that sort of thing would be considered totally unacceptable, inappropriate or downright illegal. But they did it anyway and got away with it to boot!
John Baptist dos Santos caused quite a stir when he allowed up close and personal illustrations made of his diphallic condition. Myrtle Corbin posed nude in her younger years. Millie-Christine were coaxed "after great persuasion" by Dr. Pancoast to pose semi-nude. The scowl on Millie's face says it all. In total contrast, Rosa and Josepha Blazek appeared to have no problem at all posing for their nude shot. They even look delighted! Of course, everyone's familiar with Frank Lentini's contribution. Fat man Chauncy Morlan posed in the all-together for none other than famed freak photographer Charles Eisenmann. Even the great Nikolai Kobelkoff took it all off! Then there was the Elephant Man himself, as if Merrick hadn't been humiliated enough already. The Tocci Twins (barely) stood naked in their youth and even Fanny Mills posed for what Mitchell describes as "an unbearably pathetic, nude portrait." Krao was certainly nude in her manager's arms and Serpentina appears in a see-through blouse in a risque photo taken from her biographical pamphlet. And then, of course, there are all those half men/half women. Does anyone know how they all got away with it? |
