PRIMO "DA PREEM" CARNERA was discovered doing a strongman act for a small French circus. He was "developed" into a boxer and brought over to the U.S. where he was promoted like a sort of circus giant / boxer although he stood only 6'6".  It is generally agreed his fights were phony, his manager

SIDESHOW PUGILISTS
By 1882 boxing had become one of the most popular sports in the free world so it's no wonder that sideshow performers and their promoters got in on the act. But the closest thing that the sideshow world came to a true contender was Charley Freeman, the "American Giant". Some say he was the first American oddity to perform in Europe and the first to lay claim (unoficially) to the World's Heavyweight Title.

His world as a pro boxer fell apart when he met up with Max Baer in 1934.  Though he was knocked down 13 times, it is to his credit he lasted eleven rounds.
