In the 1920s a half-and-half was exhibited in En- gland and the United States under the name of Mondu. "Brother and Sister in One Body—the Ninth Wonder of the World," a pamphlet that he (or she) distrib- uted declared. Mondu was bom in 1905 in Blackpool, England. According to this "human enigma," he was a girl until the age of twelve, when he had an operation that caused the other side of his body to take on male char- acteristics. "There is real drama and also a touch of genuine comedy in this mysterious prosess of evolution which forces a girl to shoulder the responsibilities of a man without having been prepared by a masculine training and a boy's background," Mondu's pamphlet declared. In his pamphlet Mondu provided a list of ques- tions he was frequently asked, with his answers. Here are a few of them: "Are you man or woman?" "I am half of each, one side male, the other fe- male." "What sex do you ean to the strongest, man or woman?" "To the male." "Are you married?" "Yes." "Are both sexes developed?" "Yes." "Do you show your body in private?" "No, I have been offered as high as $100 to $500, but sorry to say I do not submit to this for I am so sensitive at this time of life." |
