LYA GRAF
I know nothing of this little lady's career prior to her arrival in America in 1933 to appear with "The Greatest Show on Earth" - Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus.
From the photos seen here it is evident that prior to her arrival in the States she had a career as a showperson in her native Germany and probably travelled throughout Europe. I've noticed that she's always photographed alone and never as part of a troupe.
After the Circus's Madison Square Garden engagement in New York the Show moved West. It was something that happened at the Washington, D.C. stop that propelled the kleine Dame into the news and kept alive her memory that might otherwise have been lost in the cinders and sawdust.
