(above) Although slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865, racism would be rampant and effusive for at least another 100 yrs in that country.

(right) In this photo the couple are presented in a more "dignified" manner. However, it would be a mistake to believe the circus was now taking a more sanguine approach to the duos exhibition.. More likely, their manager was attempting to draw in more patrons through an overt  presentation of a racial dichotomy.
(above)  The reference to German East Africa dates this photo to prior to WWI.
(below)  The pair were also billed as "Zib and Izzit"
