| FREAK OF NATURE ? | ||||
| Do you have problems with this phrase? Originally, it had no negative connotation and was used interchangeably to speak of any oddly developed plant, animal or human. One could even argue that when human exhibition was at its peak in the late 19th century, the phrase was practically an honor! But as the dime museums became less popular as entertainment, exhibiting humans for profit appealed mostly to lowbrows. Gradually "freak", which is an abbreviation for the phrase, then became a single-word invective when applied to humans abnormally developed. But words are living things that have no intrinsic meaning. They mean whatever we decide they mean. By using the phrase here I hope, in my own small way, to take it back to its original meaning. |
