The popularity of the American West in European culture is largely due to the writings of German-born Karl May.
  To this day many German citizens are afficionados of the culture, real or imagined, and comprise a large part of the tourists who visit America's western states.

Frenchman "Djelmako" made a living by pretending to be an American Indian but why is he called the "King of the Air Gunners"?
I don't know anything more about this tall German gentleman.
  It appears the story was told that he was a native American who was captured and civilized.
  There was an American giant who went by the show-name "Karroo" (see below) but I don't know if they were the same person
