BELLE  CARTER
THE LADY WITH THE HORSE'S MANE
"The greatest curiosity of the age is at the musee this week.  This strange caprice of nature is in the person of Miss Bell Carter, a handsome and modest young lady with a horse's mane growing along the spinal column.  This remarkable phenomenon made its appearance when the lady was 5 years old, and has puzzled the brains of many men of science to account for.  They could not do so, and were compelled to let the case rest as a most wonderful lapsus naturae.  - Nov 1891
(right) This circus poster, advertising the Barnum & Bailey Show on its 1897 - 1902 European tour, appears to indicate that Miss Carter travelled with the show then.
She would be the performer standing sixth from the right.
