OSWALD  BALLING
WEDDING OF GIANTS IN BERLIN

BRIDEGROOM MEASURED SEVEN FEET  TWO INCHES IN STOCKINGS

Berlin claims to have the biggest bridal pair among its inhabitants.  The couple met in the Panoptikon, a sort of museum and playhouse of continuous performances, and it was not long before their big hearts began to beat as one.
As to race and language there is nothing akin between these modern giants.  Oswald Balling, the bridegorrm, is a native of Bavaria; Hee-Sin, the bride, hails from far away Tonkin.  At the wedding which took place in the presence of a large audience in the Panoptikom, it was remarked how perfectly formed both the man and the woman were, something unusual with modern giants.  What was most pleasing of all was that both were really good-looking.  There was nothing awkward about their carriage or gesture, despite the fact that Oswald is a goliath measuring exactly seven feet two inches in his stockings while Hee-Sin is only one and a half inches shorter.
A ludicrous contrast at the wedding ceremony was affected by the selecting of two pygmies as best men.  They were Ole Olsen, an intelligent, healthy, Norwegian dwarf, 50 years old and not quite three feet tall, and Willy Wendt, 16 years old, who is a few inches shorter.  Oswald Balling served in the royal body guard of Munich from 1896 to 1898. He is 22 years old, while his bride is two years his junior.
"The Goliath of the German Army / Oswald Balling and Wife, Tallest Couple in the World"
-- Oct 1900
One report says Oswald was born in 1876 or '77 in Kissingen, Germany but another says he was born in New York of Bavarian parentage. When his father and mother died he was taken back to Germany and did military service in the Bavarian guards from 1896 to 1898 when he was honorably discharged as "being grown too big for any size of accouterment provided by the state."
His wife, Hee-Sen was born in Tonkin, China. Her dad was Chinese and her mother was a German governess to the children of the French minister at Hunan.
She was 6'5"
Oswald and wife were attractions at the Oktoberfest in Munich in 1906
Little Willi Wendt stood 2'7" and served as one of the best men at Herr Balling's nuptials
