ALICE DOHERTY
The seller of the 3 photos below had this to say: "I found these old pictures of "Alice, the Hairy Woman". It came in a box of old circus pictures that belonged to her. Her name was Alice Doherty and she seemed to have worked for various circuses including Barnum and Bailey. All the pictures are originals and look a little better than the pics I have, because I took a picture of the picture, instead of scanning them. One is of her as a little girl, one is of her as what appears to be in her teens, and one that she's a little older."
Something sort of odd that I've noticed is that many of the photos of Alice that I've seen come up for auction look to be intended for personal or family use - and not taken with the intention of selling them whenever she exhibited.
ALICE THE WONDER
Alice Elizabeth with, left to right, Aloysius her Dad, sister Agnes, and mother Mary holding her baby brother Danny. ca 1892. Mrs. Doherty had three other children: Edward, Joseph and a baby that died young. Go HERE for a photo of the Doherty clan with Joseph and Daniel ca 1908.
This remarkable-looking lady was first exhibited when she was just a tot but when she became of school age it is believed she discontinued touring until she turned 18 in 1905. Although born in Minnesota, the Doherty family moved to Dallas when Alice was around 20. Alice's Dad died sometime after 1912, possibly in 1915, as this would explain why Alice then retired. Alice, who never did marry, passed away in 1933 of complications due to a hysterectomy. She was just 46 years old and was buried in Calvary Hill Cemetery in her adopted hometown of Dallas.
