The seller of these six photos had this to say:
"I bought these images from a man living in Texas who bought them at a moving sale in Texas.  He bought them from Alice Dougherty's sister-in-law whose husband (Alice's brother) had recently died.  These photos belonged originally to Alice Daugherty herself.  After Alice died her brother came to possess them thus, after he died, ending up in the possession of Alice's sister-in-law.  She had no use for them so, along with the usual stuff, sold them at a moving sale where the lucky guy I bought them from got them.  Needless to say, these one of a kind images are extremely rare - especially considering where they came from."
Alice's show was a stand-alone show, which type of show became known in the business as a single-0 show.  She did not exhibit with anyone else as part of a five-in-one or ten-in-one show which was popular by this time.  That's probably her in the middle with her face heavily veiled.
I date all six of these photos as ca. 1910 when Alice's show booked with the Herbert A . Kline Carnival Company.  Notice the water show to the left of Alice's show.  This show would feature diving girls in flesh baring and form fitting outfits which never failed to attract  the male patrons!
Alice was most often billed as "Alice the Wonder" and never, never as a "dog-faced girl" or "lion-faced girl."  She would have been about 20 years old at this time.
Alice's show was what is known in carnival vernacular as a "pit show".  Although out in the open, you can't see anything from the outside.  You buy your ticket, go up the steps, and walk around and look down on Alice doing mundane things.  This is not a candid photo.  Notice the showman pointing to the ALICE banner with his walking stick.
The first ferris wheel was built for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The towers supporting the wheel were 14 stories tall and the ride could hold more that 2000 people!  The wheel pictured here was just right for traveling carnivals and still gave the patrons plenty of enjoyment.
Traveling shows did not always set up on empty lots.  Here, the show is set up right on the streets of some mid-west city.   Alice's show is somewhere here but it's hard to make out.
